CMBD CORES AND FACILITIESEXPERIMENTAL BIOMECHANICS COREThe Experimental Biomechanics Core (EBC) has been established with support from the Center for Metabolic Bone Disease, Cell Adhesion Matrix Research Center, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Physics, HSF/GEF, School of Dentistry, School of Engineering, and Division of Orthopedic Surgery at UAB. Its mission is to provide collaborating investigators with state-of-the-art equipment and trained personnel to facilitate mechanical testing and measurement of mechanical properties of biological and man-made materials, structures and constructs.
Large scale mechanical testing equipment associated with the EBC is housed in the Musculoskeletal Mechanics Laboratory (Hoehn 270-271, 1075 13th Street South, Birmingham, AL, 35294-4440), which contains 1,800 sq. ft. of research space with designated areas for specimen preparation and storage, mechanical and impact testing. The office of Dr. Alan W. Eberhardt (Director) is located one floor above the lab to facilitate close supervision of the projects.
The Hoehn facilities include:
Two MTS 858 Mini-Bionix Mechanical Testing Systems
VIA Systems Pneumatic Impactor
Instron Dynatup Drop Tower
AMTI OrthoPOD Friction and Wear Tester
Miscellaneous equipment:
High and low speed infrared cameras
Strain gauge equipment
Accelerometers
Extensometer, inclinometers, LVDTs, displacement/rotation measurementAdditional low-force testing equipment is located in the Shelby Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Building (1825 University Blvd, Birmingham, AL, 35294-2182).
The Shelby facilities include:
Low-Force Planar Biaxial Testing Machine
Nano/Micro Hardness Tester
