CENTER FOR METABOLIC BONE DISEASE
Request for Pilot and Feasibility Applications
Deadline:  Monday, July 27, 2009

The Center for Metabolic Bone Disease (CMBD) is pleased to announce that it will fund two pilot and feasibility grants for up to $33,000/year, renewable for one year. The general focus will be bone biology and disease. We encourage basic and translational research applications.

This will be a two-step process.

STEP ONE:  SUBMISSION OF PRE-PROPOSAL:
Eligibility:Principal Investigators must have primary faculty appointments at UAB at the level of Instructor or higher, and should not have other resources adequate for pilot studies in this area.

We anticipate that successful applicants will be Instructors or Assistant Professors, but more established faculty, with a new interest in the area of bone disease, are encouraged to apply.

To apply:Provide a letter (two-page maximum) summarizing aims, background, and planned research, along with a title of the project (title not to exceed 81 characters). Also attach your four-page NIH biographical sketch, but no other documents.

Due Date:July 27, 2009 (Monday)

Submission:  Submit letters with NIH biographical sketches electronically to Marsha Moore at marsham@uab.edu by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, July 27, 2009.

Evaluation:A CMBD Committee will evaluate the applications, and select the most promising candidates to submit full proposals.

Final Applicants Selected:August 6, 2009 (Thursday)

STEP TWO:  SUBMISSION OF FULL PROPOSAL BY APPLICANTS SELECTED FROM STEP ONE:
To apply:Provide a NIH-formatted full grant (using the PHS 398 forms revised 11/07), but limit the research plan to 10 single-spaced pages. The application should include the 1) NIH face-page, 2) abstract page, 3) table of contents, 4) detailed budget for initial budget period (10% effort and salary of PI to be included), 5) budget for entire proposed period including the budget justification section, 6) four-page biographical sketch, 7) other support, 8) resources, and 9) research plan. Indirect costs are not to be included.

Full Applications Due: September 18, 2009 (Friday)
Beginning Funding Date: October 1, 2009 (Thursday)
Successful candidates are urged to include interactions with bone center faculty and make use of the CMBD core facilities.  CMBD members and available core facilities are listed on the CMBD web page (http://cmbd.path.uab.edu ).
