Research/Clinical Interest Description
Michael McCracken, DDS, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Prosthodontics and Biomaterials and the Director of the Predoctoral Implant Curriculum. He is an Associate Scientist in the Center for Metabolic Bone Disease and has a joint appointment in the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

Dr. McCracken is pursuing clinical and basic science research targeting the interaction between systemic disease and bone response. One project has identified a unique interaction between dental implant materials and bone growth in a diabetic animal model. Also, Dr. McCracken is preparing to begin a clinical research training program under the direction of Dr. Larry Moreland examining the potential relationship between bone loss associated with rheumatoid arthritis and alveolar bone loss present with periodontal disease. This will augment his previous work on the manipulation of host response to dental implants using bioengineered materials and growth factors.
